Risks and complications

Pediatric circumcision risks and complications

In our centre, our Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Surgical Specialsits will take care of our patients comprehensively from consultation, physical examination, diagnosis,, circumcision surgery to clinic follow-up.  Each of our Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Surgical Specialsits had performed thousands of circumcision.  Parents can certainly count on our expertise.

Circumcision is a minor surgical operation with risk of less than few percent.  The followings are possible situations that patients may encounter:

  • Minor blood streaks or oozing at the wound edge can be stopped by gentle pressure over the wound edge for 15- 30 minutes. Then, clean the wound with distilled water / normal saline /antiseptic solution. Return to your surgeon for advice and treatment if necessary.
  • Patients may feel hypersensitivity over the newly exposed glans of penis upon touching, and may have prolonged erection and pain.  Apply ice or cool numbing jelly over the glans of penis will stop these.
  • There may be minor wound serum discharge.  Dry the wound with sterile gauze and use a hair dryer to blow the wound dry. The serum will dry up and form a protective scab over the wound.
  • When there is pus discharge, wound redness and tenderness upon touching, it may mean there is wound infection.  Please return to us for early diagnosis and treatment.

In reality, most of our patients have very good outcome with regular follow up and following our specialists' intructions (The most important of all is to keep the wound dry).
